Underwater Pumpkin Carving in the Desert?
Have you ever considered carving a pumpkin underwater? No. We hadn’t either until today. Every year in Arizona the Lake Havasu Dive Association holds an underwater pumpkin carving contest and we couldn’t resist. The annual event is staged by Captain Kathy of the association and all you have to do is show up with your pumpkin and gear in hand. So, we did just that!
We armed ourselves with cheap tiny saws, a little imagination and suited up. We gut our pumpkins and swim down 15-30ft to sculpt away. We have 30min to do our best. Judges rate our aquatic pumpkins on their artistic originality, as well as the degree of difficulty to carve the entry in the watery and buoyant environment. I have to admit that it was not as difficult as I thought it was going to be, but it was a challenge!
Check out the video, take notes of the tips I was given and make a strategy. After watching this, you may just decide to join in or start your own annual underwater event! Lake Havasu Divers make good use of their lake and even if you are land locked, someone you know must have a pool!
